Digital Competence: Using an online learning platform & Multiple sign ins, navigating a new website
Level: Bronze
Subject: Maths
Lesson Duration: 60

Lesson Objective

1st year introduction to chromebooks and using IXL website, students will use personal log ins for the chromebook and then log in again to the website, the aim is for them to be comfortable using different usernames and passwords and navigating google chrome to find the specific website and navigate it.

Lesson Overview/Structure

I have labels for all students with their email addresses and passwords stuck into their journals, I will give out a new sticker to each student with their different login details for IXL

I have detailed instructions on the board, step by step:
1. Log in to chromebook
2. Open google chrome and an image to what this looks like
3. Go to www.ixl.ie
4. Using your details log in
5. Go to topic – Number and complete starred questions

Lesson Review

Some students had issues with their login details, so it took a bit of time to get everyone on to a chromebook.
There were also some issues with their logins for IXL, students were slow to troubleshoot and try to solve this issue themselves, so I spent a lot of time logging individuals in
I had preset questions for the students to answer, I decided against this on the first day due totiming issues. I asked the students to pick a topic and answer questions in there that they liked
Every student did get logged in and working, I was able to display their classroom activity and they enjoyed that, seeing their score increase

Advice for other teachers:

I had anticipated fewer login issues, be prepared for that to take more time than you have planned.
I had also set questions which were not needed for the first time this was used with the class. The element of competition is powerful with my first years, the promise of a prize seems to work well as a form of encouragement
