Digital Competence: The ability to find information effectively and efficiently
Level: Bronze
Subject: History
Lesson Duration: 60

Lesson Objective

As part of this series of history lessons, the class are tasked with searching through a set of pre-selected YouTube videos and finding content related to the lesson topic. The set of pre-selected videos includes content from a range of sources, including content that is irrelevant

Lesson Overview/Structure

Students have already covered the topic of World War II. This exercise encourages students to look for alternative sources of information to inform their thinking and develop their understanding.

The steps provided for the students are as follows:
1. Links to each of the videos provided on the Google Class page.

2. Students are asked to review the metadata of the content: title, description, tags, channel name, creation date to make initial evaluation.

3. Students are asked to watch each video to decide if it is relevant to their work.

4. Students are asked to note the reason they chose each video.

Lesson Review

The students definitely engaged more with the content they were viewing and started to think about why they selected each video.
In future, I would consider asking students to go directly to YouTube to search for videos. This would be a much more challenging task, but it would give me a good sense of how good students are at finding content on their own.

Advice for other teachers:

Viewing videos before selection takes time. You need to allow students sufficient time to watch each video and make their selection.
